BASF, a global frontrunner in chemical innovation, has partnered with Hagihara Industries, a prominent Japanese manufacturer of synthetic fibers, to create robust polyolefin yarns specifically designed for artificial turf in sports facilities such as football pitches, tennis courts, and baseball fields. This collaboration is the culmination of three years of joint research and development, resulting in a breakthrough formulation enhanced with BASF’s Tinuvin® light stabilizers. These additives significantly extend the lifespan of synthetic grass by protecting it from UV degradation and preserving its vivid color even after prolonged outdoor exposure.
Norio Funakoshi, Chief of Fundamental Research Section at Hagihara Industries, noted, “One of the key challenges in artificial turf production is ensuring its resilience against prolonged sun exposure and extreme weather. With growing customer demand for more durable turf, BASF offered their expertise by recommending the optimal additive combination.”
The Tinuvin® series of light stabilizers developed by BASF works by converting ultraviolet (UV) radiation into harmless thermal energy. This mechanism prevents UV rays from deteriorating the polymer structure of the turf, which can otherwise weaken its mechanical properties such as strength and flexibility. The specialized additives stop this degradation at a molecular level, effectively prolonging the material’s usability.
By integrating these advanced light stabilizers into their yarn production, Hagihara Industries has been able to produce synthetic turf that can maintain its integrity and appearance for up to a decade. One example of this success is the artificial turf installed at the training facility of Fagiano Okayama, a J-League soccer team in Okayama Prefecture. The turf has earned praise for its outstanding performance and durability.
Hazel Sprafke, Vice President of Global Business Management, Plastic Additives Asia Pacific at BASF, expressed her satisfaction with the results, stating, “This partnership showcases how we can solve complex challenges for our customers through dedicated innovation. It’s a prime example of collaborative progress.”
Beyond synthetic grass, BASF continues to deliver innovative stabilization technologies for various outdoor plastic applications, including construction tarps, heavy-duty waterproof covers, and pool liners. The company’s broad portfolio of additives helps industry partners manufacture outdoor products that offer longevity, performance, and cost efficiency, reinforcing BASF’s reputation as a reliable innovator in plastic additive solutions.
