YKK Switches to Low-Carbon Aluminum for All Zippers

YKK Transitions to Low-Carbon Aluminum for Eco-Friendly Zippers

YKK, a global leader in fastening solutions, has announced a major sustainability milestone: all of its aluminum alloy zippers will now be manufactured using low-carbon aluminum. This shift supports YKK’s commitment to achieving climate neutrality by 2050.

The low-carbon aluminum—sourced through a partnership with Sumitomo Electric Industries and Sumitomo Electric Toyama—is produced using renewable energy, dramatically reducing carbon emissions compared to conventional aluminum.

This move also advances YKK’s 2030 climate targets, which include:

  • 50% reduction in direct and indirect emissions (Scope 1 & 2)
  • 30% reduction in supply chain emissions (Scope 3)
    Baseline: 2018 levels

In addition to adopting recycled and plant-based materials in other products, this initiative reinforces YKK’s mission to lead the fashion and apparel industry toward a greener, more sustainable future.
