CEMATEX Strengthens EU Advocacy for Textile Machinery

CEMATEX, the European Committee of Textile Machinery Manufacturers, is boosting its role as the voice of the EU textile machinery sector. The association has increased its engagement with EU institutions and key stakeholders to strengthen its influence.

Registration in the EU Transparency Register

According to Mr. Alex Zucchi, President of CEMATEX, registering in the EU Transparency Register is a major step forward. “This registration puts CEMATEX in a strong position to represent the industry in dialogue with EU legislators,” he explained. It also allows the group to contribute to upcoming legislative initiatives.

Supporting Sustainable Textiles

CEMATEX is actively involved in the EU Sustainable Textiles Transition Pathway. The association supports moving towards a sustainable textile ecosystem in Europe. It has joined the EU Textiles Ecosystem platform to strengthen industry connections and visibility.

Monitoring EU Legislation

The organisation closely follows EU regulations affecting textiles. These include:

  • Eco-Design Regulation (Textile Delegated Act)
  • Waste Framework Directive
  • Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules for apparel
  • Market surveillance and customs reform

Trade Advocacy Efforts

CEMATEX represents member interests in global trade. Key priorities include:

  • The Indian Omnibus Technical Regulation, which requires compulsory certification for textile machinery. CEMATEX is lobbying for its postponement.
  • Opposing compulsory certification for CE-marked machinery in Europe.

CEMATEX has worked with other industry associations to push the European Commission to classify this as a Technical Barrier to Trade (TBT) at the WTO.

Strengthening Market Surveillance

CEMATEX advocates for stricter enforcement against non-compliant imports. It has:

  • Developed a position paper for EU Member State Market Surveillance Authorities.
  • Launched plans to help customs identify non-compliant machinery sources.
  • Formed a Machine Safety Committee to collect compliance evidence.

Looking Ahead

Through these initiatives, CEMATEX reinforces its leadership role. Mr. Zucchi stated: “By engaging with EU decision-making and defending trade interests, we aim to ensure a competitive, sustainable, and innovative future for Europe’s textile machinery industry.”
