At the start of 2024, Adidas announced it will no longer use kangaroo leather in its products, reinforcing its commitment to ethical and sustainable materials. Though kangaroo leather represented less than 1% of its total material usage, Adidas has already begun replacing it with animal-friendly alternatives across its product lines.
This decision follows similar moves by other major sportswear brands like Nike and Puma, all responding to growing concerns from animal welfare organizations. Critics have highlighted the inhumane methods often involved in harvesting kangaroos, including the harm caused to both adults and joeys.
Looking ahead, Adidas plans to source leather only from suppliers who meet strict environmental and ethical guidelines. The brand aims to completely eliminate leather linked to deforestation by 2030. This shift is part of a broader initiative to reduce environmental impact and increase supply chain transparency.
