Bangladesh Leather Eyes $7B Export Target by 2030

Bangladesh Leather Industry Sets Ambitious Export Goal

Bangladesh’s leather industry is targeting a major boost in exports—from $1.22 billion to $7 billion by 2030. Backed by over 220 tanneries, skilled labor, and easy access to raw materials, the country holds strong potential to become a global leader in leather goods.

Despite this promise, critical challenges remain. Many tanneries still fall short of international environmental and safety standards. The central effluent treatment plant in Savar struggles to manage wastewater properly, contributing to pollution. Additionally, the lack of global certifications limits access to high-value international markets.

Worker welfare is another major concern. Many tannery workers face low wages, unsafe conditions, and lack formal contracts. For sustainable growth, the industry must invest in cleaner technologies and improve labor practices. Responsible reform is key to unlocking the sector’s full potential and ensuring long-term global competitiveness.
