Bangladesh’s ready-made garment (RMG) industry is being urged to diversify its product offerings to strengthen its global market position and boost export potential. Industry experts warn that relying heavily on a few basics—like T-shirts, trousers, and jackets—leaves the sector exposed to shifting global trends.
Currently, about 79% of RMG exports come from a limited range of products. With global demand increasingly leaning toward man-made fiber (MMF), sportswear, and formal wear, Bangladesh must expand its capabilities to meet new market needs. Countries like China and Vietnam are already leading in these categories, pushing Bangladesh to follow suit.
Exploring new export destinations such as Japan, South Korea, and India could also reduce overreliance on traditional markets. Industry growth will depend on adopting modern technologies, upskilling workers, and embracing sustainable practices to ensure long-term competitiveness.
