DRDO & AIIMS Bibinagar unveil first Make-in-India cost-effective advanced Carbon Fibre Foot Prosthesis

In a major milestone under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, DRDO’s Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL) and AIIMS Bibinagar have jointly unveiled the first Make-in-India cost-effective advanced Carbon Fibre Foot Prosthesis. The innovation, named AIIMS Bibinagar – DRDL, DRDO Indigenously Developed Optimised Carbon Foot Prosthesis (ADIDOC), was launched on July 14, 2025, by Dr GA Srinivasa Murthy, Distinguished Scientist & Director, DRDL, along with Dr Ahanthem Santa Singh, Executive Director, AIIMS Bibinagar.

ADIDOC has been biomechanically validated to withstand loads of up to 125 kg with an adequate safety margin and is available in three variants to meet the needs of users across different weight categories. Designed to match the performance of internationally available prosthetics, ADIDOC offers an affordable alternative aimed at enhancing accessibility across India.

While comparable imported prosthetics cost approximately ₹2 lakh, ADIDOC’s production cost is projected to be under ₹20,000, thereby dramatically increasing affordability for amputees in lower-income groups, decreasing reliance on imported devices, and fostering greater inclusion of persons with disabilities into the economic and social mainstream.
