Energy Shortage Threatens Bangladesh’s Textile Industry

Bangladesh Textile Sector Faces Disruption Amid Energy Crisis

Bangladesh’s textile and garment sector, which drives over 80% of the nation’s export revenue, is grappling with a critical energy shortage. Persistent gas supply issues and power outages are forcing many mills to cut production or halt operations, putting jobs and global trade relationships at risk.

The Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) is calling for urgent government intervention to stabilize energy access. BTMA President Showkat Aziz Russell emphasized that despite the sector’s economic value, it receives insufficient energy support compared to other industries.

Industry leaders are urging the government to:

  • Lower energy costs
  • Incentivize energy-efficient technologies
  • Invest in reliable infrastructure

Experts warn that without immediate action, international buyers may shift orders to competing countries, undermining Bangladesh’s reputation and weakening its position as a global textile hub.
