
New Delhi, February 15, 2025 – The European Union (EU) and the Ministry of Textiles have jointly launched seven new projects to strengthen India’s textile and handicraft sector. Announced at Bharat Tex 2025, these initiatives, funded by the EU with a €9.5 million (₹85.5 crore) grant, aim to promote sustainability, resource efficiency, and inclusive growth across the textile industry while empowering local communities, artisans, and women entrepreneurs.
Impact & Reach
These projects will be implemented across nine Indian states – Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, and Haryana – and will directly benefit 35,000 individuals, including:
✔ 15,000 MSMEs
✔ 5,000 artisans
✔ 15,000 farmer-producers
By integrating sustainability and market-driven innovations, the projects will also economically empower approximately 200,000 women, contributing to a more inclusive and thriving textile ecosystem.
Alignment with Sustainability Goals
This initiative aligns with the Ministry of Textiles’ “Sustainable Bharat Mission for Textiles” and the EU’s Global Gateway Strategy. It complements the ongoing EU-India Resource Efficiency Circular Economy initiative, which is jointly funded by the German Federal Ministry (BMUV) and implemented by GIZ in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Government of India.
Key Focus Areas
The projects will focus on:
- Production & promotion of natural dyes, bamboo crafts, handlooms, shawls, and traditional textiles
- Enhancing production, branding, and market access for handicrafts
- Increasing income opportunities for women
- Fostering collaboration between artisans, producers, and market stakeholders
- Promoting circular economy & resource efficiency
Additionally, a Textiles Toolkit, developed in collaboration with GIZ, has been launched to support circular economy practices in the industry.
