Footwear Industry a Key Contributor to India’s Economy: Giriraj Singh

Minister cites market size and employment role during stakeholder interaction

Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh stated that the footwear industry plays a significant role in India’s economy due to its scale and labour-intensive nature. He made the remarks during an interaction with footwear industry stakeholders in New Delhi today. The discussion also covered emerging sectors and ongoing industry challenges.

Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh said that the footwear industry constitutes a major component of India’s economy, citing its market size of nearly 1.5 to 2 lakh crore rupees and its labour-intensive characteristics.

The minister was speaking during a meeting with stakeholders from the footwear industry in New Delhi today. During the interaction, he also referred to the development of new segments such as technical textiles.

Highlighting policy measures, Singh noted that a Production Linked Incentive scheme worth over 10,600 crore rupees has been introduced to support the growth of technical textiles in the country.

He also acknowledged that the footwear sector continues to encounter challenges, particularly in relation to raw material availability and quality. Singh stated that these concerns have been noted and efforts will be made to address them to support the industry.
