Functional Finishes Are Key to Textile Innovation

April 2025 – Innovations in textile coatings and functional finishes are driving the next generation of sustainable, performance-driven materials. Swiss research institute Empa has developed a cutting-edge plasma system that coats fibers with nanoprecision siloxanes, enabling eco-friendly water-repellent textiles without compromising fabric feel or breathability.

Globally, the textile chemical market, valued at $4.5 billion, is projected to grow to $5.4 billion by 2028, despite ongoing tariff uncertainties and rising regulatory pressure—particularly concerning chemical safety and environmental impact.

The EU’s REACH regulation continues to set high standards for chemical transparency and safety. In the U.S., regulatory oversight by the EPA and state agencies ensures compliance, while in India, “green” textile parks and government incentives are promoting cleaner manufacturing methods.

A spotlight is on PFAS chemicals, with recent studies highlighting their environmental persistence. Industry players are now exploring natural alternatives and multifunctional coatings, like “anupana”—a novel carrier-based method for imparting multiple functionalities using natural actives. For example, turmeric can serve both as a dye and an antibacterial agent, illustrating how plant-based chemistry can add value.

Innovators such as Resil Chemicals are developing next-gen silicones like Aquafil and Silkiest, offering moisture management and improved re-dyeability for cotton and blends. These advances support the shift toward value-added textiles, especially for activewear and functional applications.

As the industry balances safety, sustainability, and performance, the future lies in collaborative innovation. Functional finishes and textile technologies are paving the way for growth in both commodity and advanced textile markets.
