India Bans Bangladesh Apparel to Boost Local Industry

India’s Ban on Bangladeshi Clothing Aims to Strengthen Domestic Industry

India has officially banned clothing imports from Bangladesh in a major policy shift aimed at strengthening its domestic textile and apparel industry. The move, backed by the Apparel Made-Ups and Home Furnishing Sector Skill Council (AMHSSC), is expected to benefit Indian manufacturers—especially micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

Previously, Bangladesh accounted for nearly 35% of India’s apparel imports, valued at ₹6,000 crore annually. The ban, effective under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiative. The policy also addresses concerns about indirect imports of low-cost Chinese fabrics through Bangladesh.

The change is expected to generate over ₹1,000 crore in new business for Indian manufacturers and create large-scale employment opportunities across the textile value chain—from production to retail. AMHSSC is preparing to meet the rising demand for skilled workers by expanding its training programs in partnership with industry stakeholders.

This ban marks a significant step toward economic resilience, trade fairness, and building a robust domestic manufacturing ecosystem.
