Dhaka, May 18, 2025 – The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), India, has banned the import of ready-made garments (RMG) from Bangladesh via land ports, effective May 17, 2025. The move has already resulted in cargo congestion at the Benapole-Petrapole border, a major trade gateway.
This restriction impacts a significant portion of Bangladesh’s RMG exports to India, which primarily rely on land routes for faster and more economical delivery. Although sea ports like Kolkata and Nhava Sheva remain operational, they present higher costs and logistical challenges.
The Indian government cited port congestion and logistical concerns as reasons for the restriction. However, industry stakeholders caution that this sudden decision could strain bilateral trade, disrupt supply chains, and raise costs for both Bangladeshi exporters and Indian importers.
