Bangladesh RMG Exports Disrupted by Indian Import Ban
Dhaka, May 18, 2025 – The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), India, has officially banned the import of ready-made garments (RMG) from Bangladesh through land ports, effective May 17, 2025. The move has led to significant delays, with numerous trucks stranded at the Benapole-Petrapole border.
Land routes have historically handled almost half of Bangladesh’s garment exports to India, offering cost-effective and timely transportation. While sea ports such as Kolkata and Nhava Sheva remain open for imports, these alternatives come with higher costs and longer lead times, raising concerns among exporters and Indian buyers alike.
According to Indian authorities, the restriction aims to address port congestion and logistical inefficiencies. However, industry stakeholders warn the decision may strain bilateral trade relations, disrupt supply chains, and increase operational costs for businesses on both sides.
Traders and manufacturers are calling for urgent resolution to minimize economic fallout and restore smooth trade operations.
