India to soon get indigenous firefighting suit made from aluminised coated glass fabrics

Under the National Technical Textile Mission (NTTM), the Ministry of Textiles has supported the development of India’s own specialized firefighting suit—marking a major step forward for safety gear innovation. The project is led by the Northern India Textile Research Association (NITRA), in partnership with System 5S Private Ltd.

Used in sectors like defence, aerospace, oil & gas, and emergency services, such fire entry suits have traditionally been imported from countries like the USA, Europe, and China. With this indigenous solution, India now stands to reduce dependency and ramp up domestic production.

The new suit meets global standards like EN 1486 and ISO 15538, offering full-body protection against intense heat and flames. It includes a hood, gloves, boots, and is compatible with breathing apparatus—either worn inside or outside the suit.

System 5S has engineered the suit using advanced materials such as aluminised coated glass fabrics, OPAN nonwoven battings, and flame-resistant viscose. The inner layers are securely quilted for added comfort and protection.

With a current national demand of 1000 suits annually, and a production capacity to match, this homegrown innovation could significantly increase adoption among key industries. Final commercial rollout is expected soon, pending successful fire manikin testing under EN ISO 13506 standards.
