Kumaraguru College of Technology Launches Centre for Research in Technical Textiles, Signs MoUs to Drive Innovation

Coimbatore: Kumaraguru College of Technology (KCT) has taken a significant step toward advancing textile innovation by launching the Kumaraguru Centre for Research in Technical Textiles. The launch was accompanied by the signing of four strategic Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with key professional organizations to foster collaboration in research, development, and sustainability.

Strategic MoUs to Drive Innovation and Sustainability

KCT signed MoUs with the following organizations:

  • Indian Technical Textile Association (ITTA)
  • The Textile Association of India (TAI)
  • Tamil Nadu Coir Business Development Corporation (TANCOIR)
  • OETI – Institute for Ecology, Technology and Innovation

These partnerships aim to promote the development of high-value technical textile products with a strong focus on circular economy principles, waste reduction, and green manufacturing practices.

Industry Experts Emphasize Technical Textiles for Sustainable Growth

At the inaugural session of the Industry Conclave on Technology-Integrated Textiles and Fashion, K.S. Sundararaman, Chairman of the Southern India Mills’ Association (SIMA) and Managing Director of Shiva Texyarn Limited, emphasized the need for India’s textile industry to shift focus from currency-based competitiveness to value-added products. He highlighted technical textiles—such as breathable waterproof fabrics and high-strength fibers used in aerospace and defense—as key to driving sustainable growth and enhancing global competitiveness.

The conclave marked the 30th anniversary of KCT’s Department of Textile Technology, reinforcing the institution’s long-standing commitment to innovation in textile education and industry collaboration.

Reimagining Textile Education for the Future

Presiding over the event, Mr. Shankar Vanavarayar, President of Kumaraguru Institutions, stressed the importance of reinventing the Department of Textile Technology to stay relevant in a rapidly evolving global landscape.

Guest of Honour Avinash Mishra, Chairman of ITTA and CEO of Advanced Material Solutions (Koshala Profile Pvt. Ltd.), pointed out that technical textiles are experiencing annual growth rates of 8–12%, positioning them as one of India’s most dynamic and promising sectors. With 13 distinct verticals, technical textiles support various industries including aerospace, healthcare, geotechnology, and automotive, offering vast potential for innovation and expansion.

Call for National Support

K. Selvaraju, Secretary General of SIMA, proposed the creation of a National Textile Profession Competency Fund to bolster skill development, innovation, and professional growth in the textile sector.
