Magnera Launches PFAS-Free Fluid-Repellent Solution for Nonwoven Textiles

Magnera has introduced a new PFAS-free fluid-repellent solution for nonwoven textiles, designed for healthcare and other industries requiring high protection standards. The innovation provides the level of fluid resistance used in products like surgical gowns and drapes but avoids the use of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

PFAS have long been used in medical and protective textiles for their durability and resistance to water, oil and stains. Growing concerns about environmental persistence and potential health risks have led to increased regulatory action and demand for safer alternatives.

Paul Harmon, Chief Innovation and Marketing Officer at Magnera, said the solution meets industry requirements for protection, comfort and compliance while reducing pollutant impact.

Global Regulatory Pressure

Regulators worldwide are tightening PFAS rules:

  • European Union: The European Chemicals Agency has issued an updated proposal under REACH to restrict PFAS, with phased bans and time-limited exemptions under review. Final opinions are expected in 2026 before potential implementation.
  • United States: States including California, Maine and Minnesota have enacted laws restricting PFAS in multiple consumer product categories, with compliance timelines beginning in 2025.

As manufacturers move away from PFAS-based treatments, shortages and rising costs are increasing the need for alternative technologies. Magnera’s new development offers a timely option for healthcare providers and other industries.

Key Features of the New Solution

  • High-performance fluid repellency with no intentionally added PFAS
  • Breathability and comfort suitable for protective apparel
  • Alignment with upcoming regulatory requirements
  • Increased environmental responsibility

The launch positions Magnera as a provider of safer and more sustainable material solutions amid rapidly shifting global standards.
