Pakistan Textile Industry Adopts New Rights Code

Pakistan Introduces Human Rights Code for Textile Workers

The International Labour Organization (ILO) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are jointly developing a Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD) Code of Conduct to improve labor practices in Pakistan’s textile industry. This initiative aims to ensure that companies uphold human rights across their supply chains, with special focus on protecting informal workers and local communities.

A two-day consultation in Faisalabad brought together industry leaders and home-based workers to discuss how to implement the code effectively. Participants emphasized the need to raise awareness among informal workers about their rights and to encourage businesses to avoid labor abuses. The code is expected to be rolled out gradually to support smooth adoption without disrupting operations.

This move is part of Pakistan’s broader commitment to ethical business practices. As the first South Asian country to launch a National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights in 2021, Pakistan continues to lead in promoting a fair and rights-based business environment.
