PlaX Plant-Based Fibre Debuts in THE NORTH FACE and NEUTRALWORKS Outerwear Collections

Bioworks Corporation has announced the first commercial launch of its innovative plant-based synthetic fibre, PlaX, in outerwear from THE NORTH FACE and NEUTRALWORKS, brands under Goldwin Inc. Developed and refined over three years, PlaX is a modified PLA fibre engineered to enhance quality while significantly reducing environmental impact. The fibre is derived from renewable resources such as sugarcane and serves as a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based fibres like polyester.

Key highlights include:

  • A collaboration between Bioworks and Goldwin starting in 2022 led to PlaX-based pile fleece products debuting in the 2025 Fall/Winter collections for THE NORTH FACE and NEUTRALWORKS.
  • Extensive prototyping and testing ensured the fibre met high standards for dyeability and durability, supported by close work with textile and dyeing manufacturers.
  • PlaX reduces CO₂ emissions by approximately 70% in filament production and 50% in staple fibre production compared with polyester and uses about 90% less water than cotton.
  • The fibre is biodegradable under industrial composting conditions and compatible with chemical recycling, offering circularity benefits.
  • PlaX exhibits antibacterial properties, inhibiting bacterial growth and reducing odours.
  • Products featuring PlaX include THE NORTH FACE Extreme Pile Hoodie Jacket and NEUTRALWORKS SNOWMELT Full Zip Fleece, both available in multiple sizes and colours.

Bioworks aims through PlaX’s expanded adoption to reduce the fashion industry’s environmental footprint and advance sustainable, circular manufacturing practices. This launch marks a significant step in introducing next-generation plant-based fibres into mainstream performance apparel.
