Recycled Plastic Testing for Textiles Introduced Based on Polymers’ Properties

Eurofins Launches Breakthrough Testing for Recycled Textile Polymers

As demand for recycled materials surges in the fashion industry, so does the risk of greenwashing and fraud. To address this growing challenge, Eurofins Sustainability Services has introduced a novel testing method that verifies the authenticity of recycled polymers in textiles, apparel, and footwear.

With synthetic materials making up nearly two-thirds of all textiles—and brands pledging to increase recycled polyester usage—credible verification has become critical. While existing standards like the Global Recycled Standard (GRS) and Recycled Claim Standard (RCS) rely on documentation and chain-of-custody audits, Eurofins adds a powerful scientific layer of protection.

Science-Backed Traceability Through Thermal Analysis

Eurofins’ new approach uses thermal analytical methods, including differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). These techniques analyze how polymer structures change as they are recycled—changes that cannot be falsified or mimicked by additives.

  • DSC measures melting point shifts and phase changes in polymer chains, detecting even small recycled portions in fiber blends.
  • TGA identifies the composition of material blends by measuring decomposition points and weight loss, validating claims of recycled content.

These methods work on all polymer forms—pellets, fibers, fabrics, and finished garments—and are especially valuable for emerging textile-to-textile recycling streams, beyond traditional bottle-based rPET sources.

“This is about giving brands and manufacturers confidence in their sustainability claims,” said Dr. Pratik Ichhaporia, VP of Technical Services, Eurofins North America. “Our testing adds a level of certainty that’s been missing in the industry.”

Will Wise, Eurofins’ Global Technical Manager, added: “It’s not just about compliance—it’s about protecting your brand from reputational risk and proving your environmental integrity with science.”

While not a replacement for certification standards, Eurofins’ testing offers a critical additional safeguard in an increasingly complex textile ecosystem.
