Recycling Heroes 2026 Winners Announced by Global Recycling Foundation

Global Recycling Foundation (GRF) has revealed the winners of its Recycling Heroes 2026 Competition, announced on 18 March 2026 in London. This year’s theme, “Don’t Think Waste – Think Opportunity,” encouraged participants to view waste as a valuable resource and highlight its role in advancing the circular economy and sustainable practices.

Participants were required to submit short videos demonstrating how their initiatives aligned with the theme, showcasing innovative approaches to recycling and waste management.

Ranjit Baxi said:
“Once again the entries for the competition have highlighted an outstanding range of innovation and entrepreneurship, reflecting the passion which young people in particular feel about the environment. They realise that waste recycling does indeed present a golden opportunity.

“Political leaders should reflect on this desire to preserve the planet, and follow the lead to a goal which our future leaders are demanding.

“GRF understands the competing demands of the scarce financial resources available, but just as precious are the dwindling environmental resources upon which we all depend.”

A total of 15 winners were selected, each receiving $500, recognising impactful initiatives across recycling, upcycling, community engagement, and circular innovation. Projects ranged from education-linked recycling programmes in Nigeria, marine waste clean-ups in Gibraltar, and organic composting solutions in Kenya, to textile and plastic upcycling initiatives in the UAE and e-waste-to-jewellery innovation in Ireland/UK.

Other winning initiatives focused on plastic waste collection systems, circular construction water reuse in Singapore, community recycling workshops in Ukraine, environmental education in Australia, and zero-waste living advocacy in the USA. Sustainable product innovations, such as washable sanitary wear from pineapple fibres in South Africa, and solar-powered community support through recycling in the Philippines, also featured among the winners. Several projects highlighted textile waste upcycling and circular fashion solutions, reinforcing sustainability within the fashion value chain.

In addition, GRF recognised five start-up initiatives, each also awarded $500, for their contributions to recycling innovation and grassroots sustainability. These included student-led recycling programmes in Switzerland, a children’s book made from recycled coffee cups in the UK, community sanitation initiatives in Nigeria, volunteer-driven waste diversion efforts in Indonesia, and upcycling craftsmanship developed through personal resilience in Mexico.

Together, the winners demonstrate how recycling can generate economic value, social impact, and environmental benefits, while reinforcing the importance of circular thinking across industries and communities worldwide.
