SASMIRA hosts LCAS-2025 summit advancing sustainability in technical textiles

In an effort to advance sustainability in India’s technical textile industry, the Life Cycle Assessment Summit (LCAS-2025), which took place at SASMIRA in Mumbai on January 9 and 10, was a major milestone. Shri Sanjay Savkare, the Hon’ble Cabinet Minister of Textiles, Government of Maharashtra, opened the event, which emphasised the significance of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methods in shaping a sustainable future for India’s infrastructure and textile sectors. Shri Savkare stressed the need of sustainability and creativity in developing the country’s textile industry.

Prominent individuals attended the summit, including Anshu Sinha, IAS, Principal Secretary (Textiles), Government of Maharashtra; Rajeev Saxena, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India; and Smt. Roop Rashi, Textile Commissioner, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. Organized under the National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, and supported by the Department of Textiles, Government of Maharashtra, LCAS-2025 served as a milestone in advancing sustainability within the technical textiles sector.

The event featured the launch of pioneering technologies, including the Circular Weaving Technology for Seamless Tubular Geotextiles, developed by SASMIRA under NTTM in collaboration with Lohia Corp Ltd. This homegrown invention tackles important issues pertaining to strengthening poor soil. Additionally, Eve Essential, a SASMIRA-supported start-up, launched a Reusable Hygiene Product, contributing to sustainability in personal care.

Leaders and innovators in the industry received recognition for their outstanding contributions to the sector. The honorees included Yogesh K. Kusumgar, Raj Kumar Lohia, Vayu Garware, Mayoor C. Gandhi, Sanjay Tibrewala, and Anjani Prasad. Manish Raval was recognized for his transformative role in the sector, while Sanjay Saini, Scientist D, SASMIRA, was honored with the Excellence in Research & Innovation award by Shri. Savkare.

Global leaders held targeted sessions throughout the conference that provided insights into the future of life cycle assessment and technological textiles. The Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (ICAR CIFT), Maharashtra State Co-operative Textile Federation Ltd., ECOINVENT, Reliance Industries Ltd., and the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) were among the notable organisations who sponsored the event.

LCAS-2025 has shown itself to be an essential forum for fostering discussion and increasing understanding of the significance of LCA procedures in India. As LCA practices are still in the early stages in the country, the summit highlighted how integrating LCA can help Indian industries meet global sustainability standards, foster innovation, and enhance their competitiveness on the world stage. This event set the stage for further discussions on the adoption of LCA, positioning India as a future leader in sustainable technical textiles.
