Technical textiles present a significant opportunity for investments in Tamil Nadu by Taiwan companies, according to V. Arun Roy, Secretary, Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce Department, Tamil Nadu.
Speaking at the Tamil Nadu – Taiwan Technical Textiles Partnership Summit in Coimbatore on Monday, organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry, Tiruppur Exporters Association, and the Tamil Nadu government, he highlighted that Taiwan already has major investments in Tamil Nadu’s electronics and footwear sectors. Since 2021, 21 MoUs worth $1.4 billion have been signed between Taiwan companies and the State.
He noted that technical textiles could emerge as the next major sector for investment. The PM MITRA Park in Virudhunagar will have a dedicated zone and plug-and-play facilities for technical textiles, offering a strong base for Indian and Taiwan companies to collaborate.
Highlighting the region’s export strength, he said garment exports from Tiruppur and Coimbatore grew 20% in 2024–2025 to ₹45,000 crore and recorded 12% growth in the first quarter of the current fiscal. Exports are expected to increase by 15% this year. However, he stressed, “the future of the textile industry lies beyond the cotton sector. We should tap opportunities in technical textiles and MMF. It offers more opportunities in value addition.”
Maheshwari Ravikumar, Director of Handlooms, Tamil Nadu, added that the government is preparing an order to provide capital subsidies for the processing sector. Plans are also underway to introduce technical textiles courses in polytechnics and ITIs, while recommendations from Wazir Advisors to promote sportswear and athleisure production are under study.
As part of the Summit, over 55 one-to-one business meetings took place in Coimbatore between Indian and Taiwan companies.
