Trelleborg Secures Knowledge Transfer Partnership with Nottingham Trent University to Elevate Smart Medical Textiles

Trelleborg, a global leader in engineered coated fabrics, has entered a groundbreaking Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with Nottingham Trent University’s (NTU) Medical Technologies Innovation Facility. Supported in part by Innovate UK, the collaboration aims to revolutionize healthcare with smart fabric technology.

At the heart of this partnership is the development of an innovative smart mattress system designed to improve patient care and minimize medical interventions. The project combines Trelleborg’s global expertise in engineered healthcare textiles through its Dartex® brand with NTU’s advanced research in electronics, software, and smart medical fabrics.

Dr. Yang Wei of NTU shared his enthusiasm, stating, “This partnership is a powerful demonstration of how academic innovation can meet real-world needs. Our joint goal is to develop cutting-edge solutions that can redefine patient treatment.”

Antony Croston, Commercial Director for Healthcare & Medical at Trelleborg, echoed the sentiment: “This collaboration marks a milestone in the evolution of healthcare textiles. Together, we aim to deliver meaningful innovations that promote well-being globally.”

Smart fabrics are transforming the healthcare industry by offering features such as advanced pressure-sensing, data integration, and enhanced patient comfort. These technologies have the potential to reduce complications like pressure ulcers and support more accurate clinical decisions.

The 26-month KTP will focus on developing sensing systems, user interfaces, and data visualization tools, ensuring scalable solutions for global health markets. Trelleborg’s continued collaboration with leading universities underscores its commitment to innovation, inclusivity, and advancing patient-centered solutions.
