Union Minister of Textiles Shri Giriraj Singh released the study report on domestic demand for textiles, titled “Market for Textiles & Clothing: National Household Survey 2024,” on April 06, 2026. The release took place in the presence of Smt. Neelam Shami Rao, Secretary (Textiles), along with senior officials from the Ministry of Textiles.

The survey, conducted by the Textiles Committee under the Ministry, evaluates household consumption patterns in the Textiles and Apparel (T&A) sector. It provides estimates of domestic demand in the Textiles and Clothing (T&C) segment and serves as a reference for trade, industry stakeholders and policymakers.

According to the report, domestic textile demand has recorded growth over the past 15 years. The market size increased from ₹ 4.89 lakh crores in 2010 to ₹ 14.95 lakh crores in 2024, registering a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 8.3%. Within this, household contribution rose from ₹ 4.18 lakh crores in 2010 to ₹ 8.77 lakh crores in 2024, indicating its role in overall demand.

Per capita demand also increased from ₹ 2,119 in 2010 to ₹ 6,066 in 2024, reflecting a CAGR growth of 7.8%.

In terms of fibre composition, Man Made Fibre (MMF) and blended fibre-based products accounted for 52.2% of the market, followed by cotton-based products at 41.2%. Silk and wool-based products contributed 5.2% and 1.3%, respectively.

In absolute terms, MMF and blended textiles recorded growth from ₹ 1.47 lakh crores to ₹ 4.47 lakh crores, with a CAGR of 8.28%. Cotton demand increased from ₹ 0.87 lakh crores to ₹ 3.53 lakh crores, with a CAGR of 10.53%. Demand for silk and wool-based products grew at CAGR rates of 8.93% and 7.02%, respectively.

Key figures for 2024 include a total textile market size of ₹ 14.95 lakh crores, a domestic market size of ₹ 12.02 lakh crores, household demand of ₹ 8.77 lakh crores, and per capita demand of ₹ 6,066.

The report notes that while cotton-based products continue to hold a significant share in consumer preference, the share of manmade fibre-based products has increased over time.

In terms of consumption patterns, women accounted for 55.5% of textile purchases, compared to 44.5% by men. Frequently purchased products included shirts, sarees, trousers, salwar kameez, men’s jeans, T-shirts, ladies dress material, shirting, dhoti, and banian and underwear. Among these, men’s jeans showed the fastest growth in the menswear category, while leggings emerged as a key product among women consumers.

The study also identifies a rise in demand for sustainable textile products. Consumers are increasingly adopting recycled, reprocessed, reused and retailored garments. The total demand for sustainable textiles, including reused and retailored products, was estimated at ₹ 37,000 crores in 2024, with reused and retailored textiles accounting for around 58% of this segment.

Additionally, the report highlights increased use of technical textiles in household consumption. Products such as masks, sanitary napkins, bandage cloth, tents, seat cover fabrics, wipes, diapers, napkins, bandages, car seat covers and surgical disposables have seen growth in both rural and urban areas. Rural households accounted for approximately 58% of technical textile consumption, while urban households contributed around 42%.

The report is intended to support policy formulation and assist stakeholders in making business decisions related to the domestic textile market.
