Europe’s SCALE Project has officially concluded after four years of intensive collaboration among 11 partners across four countries, marking a significant step in scaling sustainable microalgae production for use in food, supplements, cosmetics, and animal nutrition. Coordinated by French biotech firm Microphyt, the project focused on industrializing microalgae-derived bioactives through a state-of-the-art facility in Baillargues, France, utilizing patented photobioreactor technology.
The SCALE plant now produces multiple new ingredients like PhaeOptim™, BrainPhyt™, ZenGut™, DunaPure™, and Luteana™ Scalp—each tailored for health, cognitive support, gut wellness, and skincare. These innovations are backed by clinical validation and FDA NDI approval in the case of ZenGut™, which is now cleared for U.S. market entry.
With sustainability at its core, the facility is powered by solar energy and equipped with advanced wastewater treatment and energy-efficient systems. It also adheres to strict food and cosmetic standards, including FSSC 22000 and COSMOS certification.
The SCALE Project’s success was driven by cross-sector partnerships with major players like CHANEL Parfums Beauté, Hedelab, Lallemand, and Institut Lyfe, showcasing applications in skincare, nutraceuticals, animal feed, and culinary innovation. Through global showcases at events like Vitafoods Europe, AlgaEurope, and Cosmetic 360, SCALE has solidified its international presence in sustainable biotech.
Though the project has ended, the SCALE website will remain live to share results and showcase breakthroughs. Microphyt’s industrial inauguration next month marks a new era in Europe’s microalgae industry.
