NovaPoly, a Recycled Polyester Yarn Engineered to Reduce Microplastic Pollution

A new recycled polyester yarn, NovaPoly, has been developed by HUGO BOSS in Germany, in collaboration with Jiaren Chemical Recycling and NBC LLC. The yarn is produced from textile waste collected during both clothing manufacturing and post-consumer use.

NovaPoly incorporates a natural additive designed to accelerate the degradation of fibers in natural environments. This additive enables the yarn to break down more readily than conventional polyester, aiming to reduce the long-term persistence of microplastics in ecosystems. The development specifically addresses concerns about microplastic pollution resulting from synthetic textiles.

The yarn is intended for use in a range of apparel products. HUGO BOSS holds the trademark and exclusive usage rights for the first year, with plans to make the fiber available to other industry partners through a licensing model in the future. NovaPoly is part of broader efforts to develop alternatives to traditional polyester and polyamide fibers.
