Borealis Bolsters Circular Solutions with Acquisition of Rialti, an Italian Polypropylene Specialist

Borealis, a global leader in polyolefin solutions, has announced its acquisition of Rialti, an Italian polypropylene compounder and recycler, in a strategic move aimed at reinforcing its commitment to sustainability. The deal, subject to customary regulatory approvals, positions Borealis to expand its offerings and better support customers in achieving their environmental goals.

Headquartered in Varese, Italy, Rialti has emerged as one of Europe’s foremost producers of sustainable polypropylene (PP) compounds, specializing in the production of mechanically recycled PP feedstock from post-industrial and post-consumer waste. With over three decades of expertise, Rialti utilizes its impressive annual capacity of 50,000 tonnes to manufacture injection molding and extrusion PP compounds for various industries, including automotive, appliances, and construction.

By integrating Rialti’s capabilities into its existing portfolio, Borealis aims to accelerate its circularity journey and enhance its ability to deliver innovative solutions for sustainable living. Lucrèce Foufopoulos, Borealis Executive Vice President of Polyolefins, Innovation & Technology, and Circular Economy Solutions, expressed enthusiasm for the acquisition, stating, “During the past decade, we’ve made steady progress in our circularity journey. The addition of Rialti to our portfolio will expand our circular offering and strengthen our ability to serve our customers in meeting their sustainability ambitions. As such, we continue reinventing essentials for sustainable living.”

This strategic move comes as Borealis cements its position as a global leader in advanced and circular polyolefin solutions. The company has long been recognized for its commitment to sustainable practices and has played a significant role in driving the circular economy within the industry. By integrating Rialti’s expertise and capabilities, Borealis will further bolster its position as a provider of environmentally conscious polyolefin solutions.

Polypropylene, a versatile plastic used in various industries, is notorious for its impact on the environment. Through Rialti’s specialization in mechanically recycled feedstock, Borealis aims to mitigate the environmental footprint associated with polypropylene production. This acquisition aligns with Borealis’ broader vision of promoting a circular economy, where materials are recycled and repurposed, reducing waste and conserving valuable resources.

As sustainability goals continue to gain momentum worldwide, Borealis’ acquisition of Rialti represents a forward-thinking move that positions the company as a leader in providing innovative, sustainable solutions to its customers. The integration of Rialti’s expertise will enable Borealis to offer a broader range of sustainable polypropylene compounds, helping industries transition towards a more environmentally responsible future.

With the acquisition agreement in place, Borealis eagerly awaits the regulatory approvals required to finalize the transaction. In the coming months, the collaboration between Borealis and Rialti is expected to set new benchmarks for sustainable polypropylene solutions, creating a positive ripple effect throughout the industry and contributing to a greener, more circular future.
