The Ministry of Textiles is working to broaden India’s textile manufacturing base beyond traditional industry hubs including Tirupur and Surat, according to an official.
As part of the initiative, discussions are being held with the governments of Chhattisgarh, Kerala and Jharkhand to support the development of textile manufacturing operations in these states.
The ministry is also prioritizing efforts to attract further investments into the sector while ensuring the effective execution of the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for textiles.
According to an official, the textile industry continues to be one of India’s largest sources of employment, generating direct employment for more than 45 million people.
At present, textile manufacturing activity in the country remains concentrated in key centres including Tirupur, Surat, Panipat and Ludhiana.
Following the launch of the third round of the PLI scheme, the Ministry of Textiles has created a dedicated unit to coordinate directly with companies and state governments involved in textile projects.
Explaining the ministry’s approach, the official said, “The idea is to remain engaged…(and) address any issues on the ground,” adding, “We have contacted states where companies are setting up production facilities to ensure their smooth implementation.”
