BASF, a German chemical company, and Hagihara Industries, a leading synthetic fiber producer in Japan, partnered to develop highly durable polyolefin yarns for artificial turf used in sports fields such as football stadiums, baseball fields, and tennis courts. After three years of joint research and development, the companies introduced an advanced formulation incorporating a series of Tinuvin® light stabilizers, specifically tailored to enhance the turf’s weather resistance and longevity.
The Tinuvin® additives act by converting damaging UV rays into harmless thermal energy, effectively shielding the polymer chains in the yarns from degradation. This innovation significantly extends the lifespan of the artificial grass, making it less susceptible to fading and weakening under prolonged sun exposure and harsh weather conditions. The result is synthetic turf that retains its vibrant color and mechanical strength for up to 10 years.
Hagihara Industries integrated these advanced formulations into its yarn manufacturing process, producing artificial turf that has already been installed at the Fagiano Okayama football club’s practice field in Okayama Prefecture, Japan. The turf has received acclaim for its exceptional durability and consistent appearance.
This collaboration highlights the growing importance of advanced chemical solutions in extending the service life and performance of synthetic turf, setting a new standard for outdoor sports and recreational surfaces. As demand for sustainable and resilient materials rises, innovations in plastic additives and fiber technology are reshaping expectations for artificial grass in professional and community sports settings.
