India is set to introduce a national sustainability certification framework for exporters as part of a broader strategy to help the country’s textile, apparel, and manufacturing sectors comply with increasingly stringent environmental and sustainability regulations in key international markets such as the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom (UK).
The initiative, led by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, aims to strengthen India’s export competitiveness by improving traceability, carbon accounting, and supply chain transparency across major export-oriented industries.
As global buyers and regulators place greater emphasis on environmental compliance, Indian exporters are expected to face growing requirements related to carbon emissions, responsible sourcing, and supply chain due diligence. The proposed certification framework is intended to provide a standardized system that helps businesses demonstrate compliance with these evolving global sustainability standards.
To support the initiative, the government has begun consulting industry stakeholders and collecting sector-specific feedback to identify products and industries that are most likely to face sustainability-linked regulations in the near future.
