Piana Technology’s Nonwovens Business Unit Achieves Global Recycling Standard Certification

Piana Technology, a 440-year-old Italian-made textile company known for its innovations in the fibre and nonwovens textiles markets, has achieved certification to the Global Recycling Standard (GRS) for its Piana Nonwovens business unit. The company’s textile facilities in Georgia and Arizona specialize in vertically and cross-lapped nonwovens, manufacturing a variety of intermediate products since 2015 and 2019, respectively.

The GRS is a product standard that verifies and tracks recycled raw materials through the supply chain. It includes criteria to prevent the use of potentially hazardous chemicals, and verifies positive social or environmental production at facilities, including requirements for worker’s rights and safety, as well as an environmental management system to set and track environmental goals. Both Piana Nonwovens facilities were assessed by a third party to verify their conformance to the standard, and were awarded a scope certificate in March.

This certification allows eligible nonwoven products from Piana Nonwovens to be made with at least 50% recycled GRS material. It’s a significant step forward for Piana Technology’s mission to offer traceable technologies that have a smaller environmental footprint, on top of their organization-wide purpose of becoming a powerhouse of sustainable innovation.

“We are proud to demonstrate our commitment to traceability, social, and environmental standards through this certification,” said Daniela Leal, sustainability manager at Piana Technology. “It is always our priority to work for the benefit and wellbeing of people and the planet.”

Piana Technology’s certification to the GRS is a testament to their commitment to sustainability and innovation. By prioritizing sustainability and transparency in their business practices, they are not only benefiting the planet but also contributing to a more socially responsible and ethical industry overall.

The textile industry has long been criticized for its environmental impact. However, companies like Piana Technology are setting a standard for others to follow, proving that the industry can become more sustainable while still remaining competitive and profitable. As consumers become increasingly aware of the environmental impact of their purchases, it is becoming more critical for companies to prioritize sustainability in their operations.

Piana Technology’s certification to the GRS is a step towards creating a more sustainable textile industry. It demonstrates that companies can still provide high-quality products while taking steps to reduce their environmental footprint. By adopting sustainable practices and transparency, companies like Piana Technology are not only benefiting themselves but also contributing to a better future for the planet and society
