Strengthening Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Security Requires Multi-Layered Strategy: ASPA

Authentication and traceability solutions can strengthen pharmaceutical packaging security alongside supplier registration, says ASPA

The Authentication Solution Providers’ Association (ASPA) has welcomed the Government of India’s initiative to strengthen oversight and traceability within the pharmaceutical packaging ecosystem, stating that enhanced accountability and transparency are important steps toward improving patient safety and preventing counterfeit medicines.

According to ASPA, the proposed registration framework for pharmaceutical packaging suppliers is a positive development that can improve regulatory oversight across the supply chain. However, the association noted that supplier registration alone may not be sufficient to address the growing challenge of counterfeit products.

ASPA has recommended the adoption of Authentication and Traceability Solutions (ATS) alongside the registration framework to build a more secure and reliable pharmaceutical supply chain. The association believes that integrating authentication technologies with traceability systems can improve product verification and strengthen supply chain integrity.

The association also emphasised that any regulatory framework should strike a balance between stronger oversight and ease of compliance, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). It further highlighted the need for standardised security practices across the pharmaceutical packaging ecosystem to support effective implementation.

ASPA stated that combining supplier registration with authentication and traceability measures can contribute to a more resilient pharmaceutical supply chain while supporting efforts to combat counterfeit medicines and enhance patient safety
