Textile Commissioner Vrunda Desai Highlights India’s Textile Export Growth Vision at TEXPROCIL Awards

Vrunda Manohar Desai emphasized India’s growing global textile competitiveness and highlighted the Government’s commitment toward strengthening exports, sustainability, and manufacturing excellence while addressing the TEXPROCIL Export Awards Function in Mumbai.

Speaking in the presence of Nirmala Sitharaman, Desai congratulated TEXPROCIL for its contribution toward promoting Indian cotton textiles globally and strengthening collaboration between industry and Government. She noted that initiatives such as the Kasturi Cotton Bharat programme have helped improve branding, traceability, and the international positioning of Indian cotton while reinforcing India’s image as a reliable and sustainable sourcing destination.

Desai stated that the textile and apparel sector continues to remain one of the strongest pillars of the Indian economy, contributing significantly to manufacturing, employment, exports, and rural livelihoods. India remains the world’s largest producer of cotton and jute and one of the leading textile manufacturing nations globally.Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “5F Vision” — “Farm to Fibre, Fibre to Factory, Factory to Fashion, Fashion to Foreign” — she said the integrated textile value chain positions India strongly in global markets.

According to Desai, India’s textile and apparel market is projected to witness substantial growth by 2030, with textile exports expected to touch USD 100 billion. She highlighted that the Government has been implementing major policy reforms and strategic interventions to support this growth trajectory. The Textile Commissioner appreciated recent Union Budget initiatives focused on textile expansion, employment generation, sustainable manufacturing, fibre development, skilling, handloom and handicrafts, and PM MITRA Parks. She stated that these initiatives are expected to support technology upgradation, integrated manufacturing ecosystems, sustainability, and globally competitive textile production while promoting scale, efficiency, innovation, and value addition across the sector.

Desai also pointed out that changing global supply chains are creating new opportunities for India as international buyers increasingly seek reliability, transparency, sustainability, and diversified sourcing destinations. However, she emphasized that achieving higher export growth would require stronger focus on quality, innovation, branding, speed, and value-added manufacturing.“We must strengthen India’s position not only as a volume supplier but also as a producer of high-value and design-led textile products,” she said.

The Textile Commissioner highlighted that the Ministry of Textiles is actively working with States and Union Territories to prepare State Export Action Plans and District Export Action Plans aimed at improving export readiness, identifying district-level strengths, and strengthening market linkages. She added that these initiatives would help Indian textile exporters leverage opportunities arising from Free Trade Agreements and ongoing international trade engagements.

Desai further stated that the Ministry continues to work closely with industry stakeholders on issues related to logistics, sustainability compliance, technology upgradation, market access, quality improvement, and trade facilitation.Acknowledging the resilience of the textile industry, she praised exporters for successfully navigating global challenges including freight volatility, supply chain disruptions, geopolitical uncertainties, and fluctuating market demand.

To further improve export competitiveness, Desai announced that the Textiles Committee has established pilot Textile Export Facilitation Centres in major textile clusters to provide exporters with guidance on compliance, Free Trade Agreements, market development, and Government schemes.Reaffirming the Government’s support, she stated that the Ministry of Textiles remains fully committed to the growth and modernization of the sector and values continued engagement with industry bodies such as TEXPROCIL.

The event concluded with the presentation of TEXPROCIL Export Awards recognizing exporters for excellence, innovation, and contribution to strengthening India’s global textile presence.
