Handloom Hackathon 2026 Concludes with Technology-Led Solutions for India’s Handloom Sector

The Handloom Hackathon 2026, a nationwide innovation initiative by the Office of the Development Commissioner for Handlooms under the Ministry of Textiles, has concluded with its Grand Finale at the Research and Innovation Park, IIT Delhi.

Conceptualised by ThinkStartup, the hackathon attracted more than 2,500 participants, with 280 finalists representing the top 100 shortlisted teams presenting technology-driven solutions aimed at modernising India’s handloom ecosystem.

The initiative brought together innovators, researchers, faculty members and handloom experts to address key challenges related to loom modernisation, design innovation, sustainability, market access and weaver livelihoods. The solutions presented during the finale focused on improving productivity while preserving traditional craftsmanship and strengthening the global competitiveness of Indian handlooms.

Technology and Tradition Come Together

Dr. M. Beena, IAS, Development Commissioner (Handlooms), highlighted the complementary role of technology and India’s handloom heritage. She emphasised the need to combine innovation with traditional craftsmanship to improve the livelihoods of weavers.

The hackathon also highlighted opportunities for technological intervention in loom processes, product design and modern marketing. Dr. Beena pointed to the Indian Handmade Portal as an important digital platform enabling weavers to reach global customers directly without intermediaries.

Four Innovations Win Top Honours

The competition featured problem statements across four major themes, with winning solutions addressing different aspects of the handloom value chain.

VIZHI – AI Powered Trend Forecasting App, developed by Madeshwaraboobalan V and Srinidhi B from IIHT Salem, won the Weaver Livelihoods & Financial Inclusion category. The AI-based platform uses market trend forecasting to help weavers anticipate demand and make more informed production decisions.

In the Market Access & Digital Integration category, Sutradhar, developed by Atharv Sanjeev Kumar and Gurkirat Singh from IIT Madras, emerged as the winner. The solution aims to connect rural weavers directly with digital and global markets, reducing dependence on intermediaries.

Savinya, developed by Naveen Goyal, Mahak Goyal and Ritu Devi of Savinya Studio, secured the top position in the Sustainability & Environmental Impact category. The solution integrates sustainability across handloom production while exploring circular economy models designed to reduce waste.

The Weaver Mithra Back Support System, developed by Sriram Vaggu and Adigoppula Vishal from KLB IIHT Hyderabad, won the Innovation in Design & Operations category. The ergonomic solution addresses occupational health challenges faced by weavers and is designed to support longer and more productive working hours.

IIT Delhi Plans Centre of Excellence for Handloom Technology

The hackathon also strengthened collaboration between government, academia and industry.

Dr. Deepti Gupta, Head of the Department of Textile and Fibre Engineering at IIT Delhi, announced the proposed Centre of Excellence for Handloom Technology at IIT Delhi, being developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Textiles.

The centre is expected to integrate technology with handloom production, with a focus on improving standardisation and productivity while retaining the distinctive characteristics of handcrafted textiles.

Focus on Innovation and Intellectual Property

Industry and academic representatives also highlighted the importance of taking handloom innovation beyond prototypes and competitions.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Vice Chancellor, World University of Design, noted that the hackathon demonstrated that handloom is not only a heritage sector but also an ecosystem capable of embracing design thinking, emerging technologies and entrepreneurship.

CV Raghu, President & Founder, General Counsel’s Association of India, emphasised the importance of intellectual property, design ownership and geographical indications as the sector adopts new technologies. He highlighted the need to build the legal and governance framework alongside technological development so that weavers and innovators can capture greater value from their creations.

Meanwhile, Sanchit Govil, Co-founder of Lal10, highlighted the importance of digital market access and solutions that reduce intermediaries and enable a greater share of value to reach weavers.

Vanita Vasudeva, Startup Portfolio Management, FITT, IIT Delhi, pointed to the potential of incubation support in helping promising prototypes evolve into viable businesses.

From Innovation to Market Implementation

The Ministry of Textiles has committed to providing one year of incubation support to investor-ready participants. The initiative is intended to create a pathway from ideation and prototyping to commercial implementation.

By supporting promising handloom technologies beyond the competition, the programme aims to strengthen the image of Brand Handloom as an innovation-led and future-ready sector while ensuring that technological advancement translates into tangible benefits for India’s weaving communities.

The successful conclusion of Handloom Hackathon 2026 highlights the growing role of technology, entrepreneurship and cross-sector collaboration in modernising India’s handloom industry while preserving its traditional knowledge and craftsmanship.
