The Australian cotton industry has made remarkable strides in sustainability over the past few decades, according to the recently released 2022 Sustainability Update by Cotton Australia and the Cotton Research and Development Corporation (CRDC). The report highlights substantial improvements in various areas, along with a commitment to addressing ongoing challenges.
One of the standout achievements is the industry’s impressive 52 percent improvement in water use efficiency since 1997. Through adopting advanced irrigation techniques and leveraging sustainable river and groundwater systems, cotton farmers have managed to increase yields while minimizing their impact on water resources.
Moreover, the update revealed a notable reduction in the hazard of pesticides to bees and algae, with a significant decline of 91 percent and 66 percent respectively since 2004. This demonstrates the industry’s dedication to safeguarding the environment and preserving crucial ecosystems.

Since 2016, there has been an increase in the proportion of female and Indigenous workers in the cotton sector, reflecting a commitment to creating a more inclusive workforce and empowering underrepresented communities.

Cotton Australia CEO Adam Kay emphasized the industry’s commitment to transparency and continuous improvement. He stated, “Our latest update clearly shows what we’re doing well, but just as importantly, it shows what challenges we have and what we’re doing to address areas where we can better manage risks and opportunities.”
Collaboration and coordination were identified as vital components of the cotton industry’s efforts to achieve sustainable intensification. The industry’s “Planet. People. Paddock.” framework serves as a tool for improving farming systems’ productivity and resilience while considering the environment’s contributions to society.
CRDC Executive Director Dr. Ian Taylor stressed the importance of collaboration, both within and outside the industry. He highlighted initiatives such as developing regionally appropriate native vegetation targets and supporting the National Soil Strategy to enhance soil health. Additionally, the cotton industry advocates for a comprehensive approach to promoting human rights on Australian farms, demonstrating its commitment to social responsibility.
