The Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel (HKRITA) has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with global textile innovation leader Jeanologia and circular economy specialist Looptworks to establish the Green Machine Circular Textile Ecosystem, a pioneering initiative designed to accelerate large-scale textile recycling and advance circularity across the fashion and textile industry.
The strategic partnership brings together scientific innovation, industrial engineering expertise, and commercial deployment capabilities to create a scalable solution for recycling blended textiles—one of the industry’s most persistent sustainability challenges.
The collaboration marks a significant transition from research-driven innovation to practical industrial implementation, providing textile manufacturers, recyclers, and fashion brands with a comprehensive pathway to adopt circular production models and reduce textile waste.
Green Machine 4.0 Powers Next-Generation Textile Recycling
At the heart of the initiative is HKRITA’s Green Machine 4.0, the latest advancement in the institute’s proprietary hydrothermal recycling technology.
The innovative system is capable of recovering polyester from cotton-polyester blended textiles at a purity level of 98% or higher without relying on harmful chemical processes. The breakthrough addresses a longstanding challenge in textile recycling, as blended fabrics have traditionally been difficult and costly to recycle efficiently.
By enabling the recovery of valuable raw materials from previously unrecyclable textiles, Green Machine 4.0 creates new opportunities for circular manufacturing while reducing dependence on virgin resources.
Industry Collaboration Creates Scalable Circular Ecosystem
Under the partnership, Jeanologia becomes the first official machinery partner for the Green Machine ecosystem. The company will provide industrial-scale machinery engineered to European standards and compliant with CE high-pressure requirements, ensuring efficient deployment and streamlined operations for recycling facilities worldwide.
Meanwhile, Looptworks, a Certified B Corporation specializing in textile recycling and upcycling solutions, will serve as a prospective adopter of the technology. The company will utilize the recovered materials to transform pre- and post-consumer textile waste into high-quality, Global Recycled Standard (GRS)-certified fibers for reintegration into the textile supply chain.
Together, the three organizations are establishing a complete ecosystem that bridges innovation, engineering, and commercial adoption, making textile-to-textile recycling more accessible and scalable.
Enabling Circular Transformation Across the Textile Industry
The Green Machine Circular Textile Ecosystem aims to deliver tangible benefits across the textile value chain.
For recyclers, the technology creates opportunities to process blended materials that were previously considered unrecyclable, opening new revenue streams and business models.
For fashion brands, it offers access to commercially viable volumes of recycled fibers that can be incorporated into products and supply chains to support sustainability targets.
Manufacturers can also leverage the ecosystem to adopt more sustainable production practices while reducing environmental impact and resource consumption.
By facilitating the recovery and reuse of textile materials, the initiative supports industry-wide efforts to close the loop on textile waste and advance a circular economy.
Industry Leaders Highlight Importance of Collaboration
Commenting on the milestone, Jake Koh, Chief Executive Officer of HKRITA, said:
“The circular economy is no longer a distant goal—it is here. With the Green Machine 4.0 now proven adoption-ready and scalable, this partnership marks a decisive shift from research to commercialisation. True innovation is defined by real-world impact, and today we are making it a reality.”
Enrique Silla, CEO and Founder of Jeanologia, emphasized the role of collaboration in driving industry transformation.
“For the last 25 years, we have transformed the denim industry through technology, innovation and collaboration. Today, we are bringing that same experience to one of the industry’s greatest challenges: textile-to-textile recycling. By combining HKRITA’s innovation, Jeanologia’s industrial engineering expertise, and Looptworks’ operational deployment capabilities, we are creating a model that can help make circularity a reality at industrial scale.”
Scott Hamlin, Founder and CEO of Looptworks, highlighted the long-standing relationship between the organizations and the significance of the technology.
“Blended materials have long been a major barrier to circularity, and this technology enables us to effectively realise their value at scale. By reintroducing recovered fibres into the supply chain, we are proving that circular solutions are both environmentally practical and economically viable.”
Invitation to Industry Stakeholders
As the Green Machine Circular Textile Ecosystem moves toward broader commercialization, HKRITA is inviting textile recyclers, manufacturers, and fashion brands to join the initiative and explore opportunities for collaboration, adoption, and expansion.
The partnership represents a major step forward in creating a sustainable and circular textile industry, demonstrating how cross-sector collaboration can transform innovative research into practical solutions with global impact.
